London property values mean many homeowners hold an estate worth far more than they might expect. A will, lasting powers of attorney and a considered plan make sure your wishes are clear and your family is protected.

We explain what you need and prepare your documents with you.

Wills and estate planning in London

If you own a flat or house in London, your home may account for most of your estate. Without a will, the law decides who inherits, which may not suit your family, and the value involved can make mistakes costly. A will lets you name who should benefit, who should look after any children and who should deal with your estate.

Many Londoners have family or property elsewhere, move often, or share homes with friends or partners they are not married to, and these circumstances raise their own questions. We explain how a will and, where useful, a trust can address them, and we cannot promise tax savings. We also suggest you review your documents whenever you move, buy or sell, or when your family changes.

Frequently asked questions

I own a share of a London flat with a friend. What happens when one of us dies?

It depends on how you own it. If you are joint tenants the survivor takes the whole; if you are tenants in common each share passes under that person’s will. It is worth checking and making wills.

How often should I review my will in London?

After any major change, such as a move, a purchase or sale, a relationship change or a birth, and generally every few years.

Is this regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority?

No. Writing wills and estate planning are not regulated by the FCA. Your mortgage advice from BestQuote is a separate service, and having one does not depend on the other.

Who reviews my documents?

Patron Law Ltd, a law firm regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, reviews and approves the documents prepared by Steve Tappin. You can check Patron Law on the SRA register at sra.org.uk.
